Oat Milk vs Almond Milk vs Soy Milk

It's now officially legal to call non-cow milk products just “milk”, thanks to the FDA's new definition. So with that being said, ever since I decided to have a dairy-free diet, I've been on the hunt for the perfect cow milk alternative for me. I've tried oat milk, almond milk, and soy milk – all of which have their own benefits. So which one is my favorite? Let’s delve into the world of non-dairy milk(s) to find out!

Milk alternatives have become much more popular in recent years due to the growth of the dairy-free market. Three common alternatives are oat milk, almond milk, and soy milk, all of which are incredibly versatile options for baking, smoothies, or simply having a bowl of cereal.

However, when it comes to comparing these three drinks and choosing the right one for you, it can be difficult to know where to start. As such, this article will explore some of the benefits and drawbacks of oat milk versus almond milk versus soy milk.

Oat Milk

Oat milk is made by blending steel-cut oats with water until a thick liquid forms. The oats are strained through a cheesecloth before adding flavorings such as salt or sugar. Oats are naturally free from dairy products so it is a great starter for anyone looking for an alternative to cow’s milk.

When it comes to oat milk, I love its creamy texture and naturally sweet flavor. It's often fortified with calcium and vitamins A & D, making it a great choice for those looking to increase their vitamin intake. Plus, it has more dietary fiber than other plant-based alternatives. On the downside, though, oat is a carb. Therefore, it is not suitable for people following a low-carb diet. Also, some companies add oils (that can be inflammatory) to make the milk creamier. So watch out for that.

  • Rich in fiber which contributes towards digestive health

Cons:

Almond Milk

Again, after straining through a cheesecloth any additional ingredients such as sweeteners or flavors can then be added. This type of ‘milk’ has been growing increasingly popular with those hoping for a healthier lifestyle due to its low-calorie count along with being free from dairy products.

Almond milk has been my go-to for many years now due to its light consistency, nutty flavor, and creamy mouthfeel. It's also high in essential vitamins like vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids, and magnesium. And it's lower in calories than other milk alternatives – a great choice if you're looking to lose weight or just maintain a healthy lifestyle. The downside of almond milk is that it doesn't have the same protein content as cow’s milk or soy milk, so if you are looking for a plant-based option with higher amounts of protein then this may not be your best bet.

Soy Milk

Soy milk is made by grinding soybeans and boiling the resulting paste with water. After straining it through a cheesecloth, sweeteners or flavorings can then be added. Soy milk has long been popular among those looking for a dairy-free alternative as it contains relatively high amounts of both protein and calcium compared to its counterparts.

Soy milk has also long been a favorite amongst vegans and vegetarians alike due to its high protein content (which rivals that of cow’s milk). It's also low in saturated fat, making it a great choice for those with heart health concerns. Plus, soy milk is naturally free of cholesterol and lactose-free. However, some people find the taste of soy milk to be quite strong and disagreeable due to its earthy flavor profile. Additionally, since soy is an allergen for many people, this may not be the best option if you have any allergies or sensitivities. Another downside of soy milk is its potential links to digestive issues and hormone imbalances in some people.

In conclusion, all three milk alternatives have their own unique benefits and drawbacks. When choosing between oat milk versus almond milk versus soy milk the best option for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. Do remember however to always read labels and check for added sugars and oils before purchasing. Whichever milk alternative you go for, it can be a great addition to your lifestyle.

For me, Soy milk contains higher levels of protein and calcium than other alternatives but may contain phytoestrogens with excessive consumption. I also don't like the taste and the digestive issues I have after consuming soy milk. Oat milk also has more cons than benefits for me. I don't like that it's heavy in carbs and added oils.

With careful consideration, Almond milk makes for the perfect delicious addition to my lifestyle! I also tried coconut milk, let me know if you want me to review it :)
